CHICHESTER U3A 30th ANNIVERSARY SUMMER PARTY
Saturday 22nd July – Save the date!

Would you like to attend our Summer Party in the private Garden of the Bishop of Chichester’s Palace?
Our Summer Party is to celebrate another successful year of Chichester u3a – in fact, it’s our 30th anniversary! We thought this was worth marking with a special event, and we hope that many members, new and old, will join us for the afternoon.
By kind permission of the Bishop of Chichester, our u3a has been granted access to the private Garden for a celebratory tea party on 22nd July. Sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be served from 3pm to 5pm, and there is seating for 150 people, as well as a large marquee. This event is open to all Chichester u3a members and their partners.
The Bishop’s Palace asks for a donation in lieu of a hire charge, which will go to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund. We are asking members to pay £5 per person which we will donate to the Fund.
Booking will close on 27th June; details and links for booking and payment are on our website and will be included in the next bulletin.
If you have any questions, please contact the Social Events organiser via this link
We look forward to seeing you on 22nd July.

Monthly Meeting at the Assembly Rooms on North Street – 15th June at 2pm

BEHIND THE SCENES ON CENTRE COURT with Alan Chalmers

For 40 years, from 1976 to 2015, Alan Chalmers was the steward responsible for the seating arrangements and security of the journalists, competitors and their guests who sought seats on Centre Court, Wimbledon to watch the matches. In the 40 years of his service, Alan was present for over 2000 matches, and has many anecdotes to share about the history of the All England Club, the workings of Wimbledon, and the many fascinating players and celebrities he encountered over the years.

Tea and coffee will be served in the Crush Bar at the rear of the Assembly Room from 1:15 to 1:45pm and the meeting starts at 2pm. We are grateful to the team of volunteers who serve the refreshments.

Group News

Climate Change Group Meeting 7th June at 2pm

The Climate Change Group meeting on Adapting Chichester Harbour to the Challenges of Climate Change will be held on Wednesday 7TH June at 2pm at Friends, Quaker House on Priory rd. All are welcome.
The speaker will be Richard Austin, the AONB Manager at the Chichester Harbour Conservancy. Richard has been in this post for the past ten years. He has a PhD in Protected Landscape Management.

The challenge is daunting with increasing storm surges putting even more pressure on the sea defences, which include the marshes and wetlands. Increasing temperatures & periods of drought, interspersed with torrential rain and flash floods all test the resilience of the various ecosystems and infrastructure. There is much work to do including the preparation of a Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the harbour.

APPEAL from the Practical Science Group for Volunteers for Current Project

Should you drink a glass of wine or take the dog for a walk before breakfast to mitigate the damaging effects of eating a carbohydrate loaded breakfast?

The U3A Practical science group  is trying to answer these weighty questions and is  looking for additional U3A members to wear a continuous glucose monitor for two weeks whilst eating a variety of food and drinks.

If you are interested in helping, please contact the group leader for more information USING THIS LINK.

National u3a & Regional Events

Here are the Third Age Trust zoom talks for the next month: still plenty to do.

In my opinion (DR), the best talk is on Leo, the business computer made by the Joe Lyons company, famous for its tea shops, Corner Houses (upmarket tea shops) etc. Remarkable company apart from the computers – during the last war they ran a government ordnance factory!
