You can use this opportunity to chat with our groups team and learn about current and new offerings, meet old friends and make new ones!
There will be three breakout tables at the coffee morning for these groups:
- Family History Group
- Classic Literature Group
- MOTO 2 Group.
Monthly Meeting on Thursday, 21st November at 2pm at the Assembly Rooms on North Street
Talk: Journeys in Biology: DNA and the Genome Revolution
Our speaker will be Darren Gowers, who will take you on a tour down into the microscopic world of a cell and explore what makes them tick! We’ll look at the central importance of DNA (or RNA if you’re a virus!) and what a gene is. From here,
we’ll think about why understanding genes and genomes helps us investigate medicines. There will be opportunities to handle and explore some 3D-printed molecules, so you can see up close ho lumpy and bumpy the molecular world is. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion at the end.
Tea and coffee will be served in the Crush Bar at the rear of the Assembly Room from 1:15 to 1:45pm and the meeting starts at 2pm.
Groups Notices
MOTO 2
MOTO is a hugely popular group that is for members who live on their own or whose partners are unable to accompany them to social events. Since the group first started, a wide variety of outings have been enjoyed by members, including meals in local restaurants, drop in coffee mornings, cinema and theatre trips, garden visits, walks, day trips by train and coach, to name but a few. All MOTO members are encouraged to contribute ideas and suggestions, and in doing so, have given much pleasure to other members and contributed to the success of MOTO.
This group is now full with over 70 members, so MOTO 2 is now being launched. This new group will initially run with links and access to MOTO 1, along similar lines and with assistance from the current MOTO group leaders.
If you would like to join the new group, come along to the November coffee morning in the Minerva Theatre Bar & Grill on Tuesday 5th November or click on this link to register your interest.

Climate Change Group
Adapting to Climate Change. Brief note on a fascinating public meeting.
The meeting, held in the Assembly Rooms on the 15th Oct was very well attended and extremely interesting. U3A Chichester’s Climate Change Group (CCG) worked with Transition Chichester in organising the meeting.
The climate is changing and the meeting was focused on adaptation, preparing ourselves for what is coming. We cannot influence the climate however much we cut our emissions, the atmosphere is global, but we can ensure that we are as well prepared as possible for the impacts resulting from the changing climate. Inundation of coastal areas, flash floods from torrential rain, the need for improving our drainage systems and the crazy issue of new residential developments being approved on land which will surely be flooded, were recurring themes throughout. Helping nature to help us through biodiversity resilience, rewilding, regenerative agriculture, afforestation were all discussed.
But the presentations and discussions also emphasised the fact that the services of the councils are very finite and the public must accept responsibility for understanding the threats and how best they can contribute to the overall effort of adaptation.
As with most meetings, there is considerable follow-up, including responses to detailed questions which needed further research.
We were extremely grateful to the chairman and speakers for the time they gave us in illustrating the regional priorities of climate change adaptation and responding to the many questions and comments.
This was the second of a series of publicised meetings on Adaptation by the Transition Chichester Climate Change Group which will be held over the next 12 to 14 months and u3a members are very much encouraged to attend.
