Message from the Groups Team
Groups are frequently started by just a few u3a members getting together for an informal chat about an interest they all share. Perhaps you’d like to join up with a few like-minded people to do something that is not currently on offer, but you feel apprehensive at the thought of suggesting a new group. The Groups Team is here to offer guidance, support and advice with every stage of a new set up.
We have many skilled and talented people in the u3a and some are willing to set up a group to share their skills and experience, but you don’t have to have any previous experience to help set up and organise a group. The term ‘Group Leader’ is just a name the u3a gives to anyone who volunteers to help organise a group. The key principle of the U3A movement is self-help – so basically, we do things together for ourselves and our members. No-one else is going to step in and offer to do things – it’s up to us, and if we don’t do it, then it won’t happen!
So, if you have the beginnings of an idea, please contact the Groups Team HERE, and a quick chat will let you see what is involved in relation to your specific suggestion and get the ball rolling!
We look forward to hearing from you – thank you
Always on the First Tuesday of each month, so please mark your calendars!

Our Coffee Mornings are held in the Bar on the first floor of the MINERVA THEATRE building, opposite the Chichester Festival Theatre.
You can use this opportunity to chat with our groups team and learn about current and new offerings, meet old friends and make new ones!
There will be three breakout tables at the coffee morning for these groups:
- 20th Century Poetry
- Crime Fiction Book Group
- Wine Tasting Group.
U3a Quiz Evenings
We are having a break from Quiz evenings for a few months, but may start again in the New Year.
This depends on finding a central venue which will appeal to our quizzing members. If anyone has
any suggestions for a venue please contact social@chichesteru3a.org.uk.
In the meantime thank you for supporting our Quizzes over recent months, and we hope to see you
again soon.
Monthly Meeting on Thursday, 19th September at 2pm at the Assembly Rooms on North Street
Talk: Origins of Sayings Used in Everyday Language

Our speaker will be Madeleine Salvetti. Her talk is titled “Origins Behind Our Sayings Used in Everyday Language.” Madeleine taught for a number of years in Portsmouth and has also trained as a Blue Badge Tourist Guide – She is now involved with Viking Cruise ships. She is a founder member of Rowans Hospice and is currently involved with the QA Hospital League of Friends.
Most of us are unaware of the origin of phrases we use automatically – but do we know why we use these phrases: Flash in the pan? Cat got your tongue? Bite the bullet? Ever wondered where some of our sayings come from? A month after the talk, you will be more aware and curious.
Tea and coffee will be served in the Crush Bar at the rear of the Assembly Room from 1:15 to 1:45pm and the meeting starts at 2pm.

Astronomy for Beginners
We tried to start an Astronomy Group for Chichester u3a earlier this year but there wasn’t anyone who could provide the necessary expertise in the subject. Happily Trevor Pitt at Bognor u3a will be starting the rerun of his Astronomy for Beginners course at North Bersted in September. This is loosely based on the GCSE course, just for interest with no tests or homework, and runs for 2 years. It is held on the second Monday of the month from 2pm-4pm at the Jubilee Hall, Chalcraft Lane, North Bersted PO21 5TU (free car park, nearest bus stop from Chichester is Royal Oak on the 700 route). Attendees pay £2 on the door, you would also need to join Bognor u3a as an Associate Member at £6.50 a year (you can attend one session without doing this to see what it’s like). Further details and contact link at Bognor u3a.
Tai Chi Group Needs Instructor!

Unfortunately the Tai Chi Group has had to close due to the fact that The Westgate Centre have been unable to secure a new tutor.
If anyone knows a Tai Chi Instructor who may be interested in teaching a group of u3a members independently from the Westgate Centre, please get in touch with Margaret HERE.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Group.
