u3a Newsletter

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Penny Blackmore, who has agreed to take on the production of the u3a Newsletter. Dick Openshaw and Pamela Kemp will be supporting her in this publication. We thank them all for stepping up, and look forward to seeing the fruits of their new energy!!

Penny is asking members and group leaders to start thinking now about colourful content for this Newsletter. As it will be a digital-only publication, print being prohibitively expensive, that allows for lots of freedom in the amount of content content we can fit in so please let’s get those creative juices flowing!
Think: group activity reports (maybe to entice new members, or simply to brag) – with lots of photos; poems; short stories; recipes; quizzes; artwork; jokes… you get the idea.

Penny is abroad for the next few weeks, but you can submit your content HERE at any time.

u3a Membership Renewals

Membership renewals are due on September 1st. An email was sent out on Wednesday explaining how to make your payment. For those of you not using email, a letter will be arriving shortly.

It is worth noting that our membership fees once again remain the same:
– £18 for a Full Individual and each Joint Member, or
– £14.00 for Associate Members who are currently Full Members at another regional u3a.

Please direct any questions or issues to the Membership Team, contact details are available on the website and in the above-mentioned email.

Upcoming Events

No Quiz and no Monthly Meeting in August.
The September Coffee Morning will be held on the 3rd and the Monthly Meeting will take place on
19 September 2024

September’s speaker will be Madeleine Salvetti, who will discuss our use of language. Most of us are unaware of all the phrases we use automatically – but do we know why we use these phrases? She hopes that the month after the talk, people will be more aware and curious about their use of language.

BEGINNERS BASIC BRIDGE COURSE –
LAST 2 PLACES REMAINING

This will be the very last opportuntity to learn Bridge in such a condensed course.  Donnington Parish Hall (West Wing) has been reserved on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (10am – 12 noon) for this ten-week course in the Autumn.  The provisional start date is Tuesday 17 September (to be confirmed).  The overall cost is about £60 which covers the cost of hiring the Hall and some basic equipment.

This compact course is based on a previously successful format requiring attendance for 2-hour sessions on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for 10 weeks.  The highly inconvenient schedule may well be a deterrent, but previous students who have made the necessary adjustments have found the sacrifice for just 10 weeks to be worthwhile.  The last three classes have each taken over one of their course days to establish their own playing group which explains why we are now limited to Tuesday and Wednesday at this venue.

This 40-hour course will enable you to play proper Acol Bridge at a basic level even if you start with no experience of card play.  Those with ‘faded’ knowledge of Whist or Bridge may also benefit from this experience as a ‘refresher’.

Please apply or seek further information via this link.  Perhaps you know someone who is not yet a U3A member who might be interested and, of course, they would be especially welcome.

Book Group Vacancy

Book Group 8 is a small, friendly group with 2 vacancies.
We meet on the first Tuesday morning of the month for 10 months of the year, September-June. Every year we choose a theme which links the 10 books, but for 2024-5 we have taken a different approach by selecting 10 books from group members personal ‘memorable’ lists. The final list is as diverse as Turgenev, Grahame Greene, Mary Wesley and Bonnie Garmus.
If you are interested in joining us contact me, Mo Frost, here.

Practical science: Mothing with French patisserie 8th August

At 9.15 we opened the moth trap to reveal some very  unexpected guests in the form of some excitable hornets hoping to breakfast on our  moths that were caught overnight in the UV trap. There were probably around 70 specimens in total. We identified about 22 species including four very fine Jersey Hawk moths. The largest specimen was a Poplar hawk. Many pretty species with interesting names were identified the furiest was the nut tree tussock one of the prettiest being the rosy footman. Photo ID proved invaluable in conjunction with our mothing books. After all the moths were released we settled down to coffee and some freshly baked pastries.  In October Dave Widdup has lined up a series of interesting experiments on magnetism and paramagnetism .
