Bulletin 210723

Dear Chichester u3a member,

As this is the holiday season, and members will also be taking  advantage of the relaxation of Covid rules, the Bulletin will be taking it a bit easier for the next month or two.
Some features will be rested – Your Favourite Walks, Photo of the Week, for example. (On the other hand, Groups News has been quite active lately, and may it continue so.)
And we will be publishing FORTNIGHTLY instead of weekly, as from next week.  So, expect the Bulletin on July 30th, August 13th, August 27th, and September 10th. After that we shall see.
Please make a note of these dates if you are thinking of putting a notice in the Bulletin in the near future.
Any urgent notices will be sent out directly, upon request.

A gentle reminder that membership subscriptions are due on 1st September.  A letter will be sent to each of you (either by email or by post) outlining the various payment options available and we do hope you will renew your membership.  We are pleased to let you know that the subscription remains unchanged from last year – £18 per individual member or £14.50 if you are an affiliated member.
For those of you who pay by standing order please note that you will need to check that the Standing Order has been updated to the correct amount.  Only you can do this, and only you can terminate the annual payment, should you wish to do so.  A Standing Order is not the same as a Direct Debit, where the amount is controlled by the recipient.  A Standing Order is controlled by you, the payer – we cannot either refuse or return the payment.
If you use online banking, you will be able to check or modify your Standing Order online.  Otherwise, you will need to contact your bank, either by phone or in person.
The committee, and member volunteers have worked very hard this past year providing Zoom for our monthly meetings and enabling our groups to continue online.  Your membership has allowed us to do this and we are looking forward to opening up more groups as rules are relaxed further.
Details of our fees and the different ways to renew your membership can be found on our website: www.chichesteru3a.org.uk/renewal/

Dave Simmons

Dear Members,
It with deep sadness that we inform you of the sudden death of Dave Simmons, newly elected to our committee. Dave promised to be an active and enthusiastic committee member with fresh ideas and a zest for life showing a real commitment to the role.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his partner Shirley and to Dave’s family.

Maureen Doyle (Chair)

Monthly Meeting

The monthly talk on August 19th will be a very interesting presentation on “The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci” given by Dr Javad Hashemi.

 Groups News

Writing for Fun

Writing for fun is a well-established group which can now welcome new members. The group meets monthly and members present their writings of up to 1000 words incorporating a given phrase and 100 words on a given topic. There is a choice for both activities which members are encouraged to suggest. “Writing for Fun” is not a creative writing group to enhance literary skills where contributions can sometimes provoke negative and destructive comment. Here the emphasis is on “fun” to encourage discussion and positive feedback; no literary skills are required or expected.

The group meets on the first Tuesday of the month (except August) from 10.30 am – 12.30 pm; it is hoped to re-commence on 7th September restrictions permitting. The venue is in south-east Chichester where the parking is currently unrestricted, and is within walking distance of two bus stops. The only cost is 50p to cover tea/coffee and biscuits.

Please contact via the U3A website and the group leader will then contact you

Practical Science Workshop

Are you interested in joining a practical science group? The projects we will undertake are suitable for all levels of interest in all branches of the sciences and natural history.  We will meet at 11 am on the first Friday of the month, initially in East Ashling.  If you are interested, please contact the groups coordinator.
