Dear Chichester u3a member,

Photography Competition

Are you a Happy Snapper?

To keep you entertained, we’re introducing a monthly fun photo competition, with a different theme each month. November’s theme is ‘Autumn Activities’. This is a broad theme, but we are hoping that the ‘active’ part of ‘activities’ will inspire creativity. We’d love to see u3a members enjoying themselves!
Your photos can be in either landscape or portrait format, and should have a title: for example, “Autumn morning, Chichester Harbour”.There are no prizes; however, all the photos will be displayed in a gallery on the website. At the end of the month, members can vote for the Picture of the Month; the winner will be the photo with the most votes. All pictures featuring members will also be placed in the permanent photo gallery.
At the end of the u3a year – i.e. September 2021 members will choose the Picture of the Year from the monthly winning entries. You may submit as many photos as you wish. Make sure you include your name and membership number in the body of the email. The closing date for this month’s entries is Friday 27th November.
Please send your entries as an email attachment to the Photo Competition.

TO COMPLY WITH PRIVACY LEGISLATION please explain to anyone whose photograph you take that it might appear on the Chichester u3a website. Ensure that you have their permission to submit it for that
purpose.

Due to COVID the booking arrangements are different this year. The College has allocated two rooms to us, one room has 6 tables for a maximum of 6 people each, and the other room has 5 tables for a maximum of 5 people each. The College is, of course, conforming to the Government regulations and therefore, as current regulations stand, there can be no mingling between tables and masks will have to be worn when entering and leaving the premises and when visiting the toilets. All orders for drinks will be taken by the staff.

The College has asked for bookings to be made directly with them by one person from each table, and the choice of menu and payment must be made at the time of booking. If you are booking for fewer than 4 people please let us or the College know if you are willing to share a table with other U3A members.

If you would like to join the Christmas lunch, please contact your friends (who must be members of the Chichester U3A) up to a maximum of 6 to share your table. Ask them to choose from the menu and ask them to pay you in order that you can make a single payment for your table to Chichester College.

You should contact Nicola Simpson at the College by email to give her your menu list and to arrange payment.

If you need further advice please get in touch with me at Jill Cook

We Need Your Talents!

In the current time of Covid it may be some time before we can go back to our normal group activities, but there is still plenty going on at u3a Chichester – 31 groups are active, either distanced or online, and monthly talks and quizzes are being held by Zoom. We think we can do even more to fill the Covid gap, but we need your help to take the activities of u3a Chichester to a whole new level!
Your Committee is brimming with ideas, but on the principle of “many hands make light work,” we are calling on you to join (or lead) collaborative teams to bring these ideas to reality by utilising the talent, technology and creative ideas we’re sure we have among us.Right now we are looking for:

  • Reporters, writers and editors for our newsletter and bulletin
  • Website editors and designers
  • Technical support for our Word Press site – everything up to and including Webmaster.
  • Enthusiastic people with ideas for groups, activities, speakers, etc.

If you can help with any of these areas or have other ideas to suggest, please CLICK HERE to connect and let us know.
In the spirit of the u3a LEARN, LAUGH, LIVE, there will be plenty of help and support if you want to LEARN about any of the areas we are looking for help with, you will be part of a team of already enthusiastic members.
With grateful thanks,
Maureen Doyle
Chairperson

We look forward to hearing from you.

Hope you’re all keeping well

November Monthly Meeting

Thursday, November 19th at 2pm

Flooding, Fracking, Housing, Planning

Four good reasons why you should have paid attention in Geography, particularly in Sussex!!

Bill Avenell on
Why is Church Lane so steep? ”

(because it so often is!) and as a retired teacher of geography it always surprises me how little people appreciate the impact which the physical geography of their area still has on their daily lives. The presentation begins with a general appreciation of West Sussex, analysing the effect that physical geography has on such things as modern settlement, planning, housing and architectural styles, communications, farming, flooding and other environmental issues.  I try to relate these general points to the area where I am speaking, using local examples and photographs wherever possible. The talk concludes with a detailed look at some really local issues; perhaps why a particular stream in your village always floods or why the local roads deviate in a curious way; and of course,

‘Why Church Lane is (or in some cases is not) so steep?’

Groups

Zoom Hosting

Are you interested in hosting Zoom meetings? Share your knowledge, improve your skills or learn new ones, and gain practical experience by joining this Group (on Zoom, of course!) Everyone is welcome. No prior knowledge is required, apart from being able to log on to Zoom. Experienced Zoom hosts who can share their knowledge will be especially welcome. Priority will be given to anyone who needs to host an existing group, or is thinking of starting a new group.

Learn about:
• creating a meeting
• booking and using the Chichester U3A Pro version
• creating a co-host (and why that is useful)
• sharing screens and using whiteboards, polls, and other features
• controlling the meeting by muting participants etc
• using Zoom on different devices

If you are interested, please contact the groups coordinator. Date and time will be discussed with those interested. Probably scheduled twice per month.

SUN ZOOM Meeting

Obviously, with the current restrictions in force, it is impossible to hold the usual popular monthly Study Day events in local venues this Autumn/Spring. Consequently, the SUN committee (SEC) are trialling a Zoom version. This will consist of two one hour talks on a general theme. If successful, we hope to plan a short programme of these Study Mornings into next year.

20th Century American Music

Saturday 28th November at 10:00 AM

Join by Zoom from 9:45 AM.

There will be two talks, entitled respectively Simply Gershwin – the music of George and Ira and A History of Rock & Roll
This is a free-to-view event with expenses covered by SUN. We are restricting numbers to 100 maximum, as this is a trial event. We ask that only current U3A members (from SUN U3As) apply and that they have some experience of viewing on Zoom. Booking is by email up to 22nd November. Email SUNbookings548@gmail.com for East Sussex and Brighton & Hove U3As whilst sunbookings5@gmail.com is for West SussexU3As. Booking is on a ‘first come’ basis and their U3A must be mentioned in their email.
An acknowledgement, with an information sheet, will be sent on 23rd November and the Zoom invitation emailed late on Friday 27th November, for security reasons.
