Continuing a Call for Volunteers

Our U3A is run entirely by volunteers and, from time to time, members move on, leaving big shoes to fill. Therefore, we are regularly seeking new enthusiastic folk to help out in a variety of areas. None of us is paid and not all of us are experts, but we do try to make the wheels run smoothly. Our monthly talks, now held at Christ Church, require a significant number of volunteers to keep this popular event running each month, as those of you who attend regularly, will have observed.

We need:-

  • A team of volunteers to help set up and run the IT for our speakers. This is not a difficult role and we can offer training. Many thanks indeed to Marilyn, who stood in for us at our wonderful talk on women painters. She has very kindly offered to put together a user guide with photos and this will make it quite simple to run the IT. Ideally, a team of folk would be best, and then nobody will need to commit to every month. It would even be good to have someone good at organisation, to manage the IT team of volunteers, even if unable to attend each month.
  • Speakers’ team help. Speakers are booked until August 2020, thanks to Henry Marshall and his wonderful team. However, Henry will be stepping down in May and the team is looking for someone to join them and take on his role, as they will very soon be planning the schedule for 2020/2021. We do have a role description and we have already had some interest shown in this role, but, once again a team working together will make lighter work of the monthly commitment.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who give up their time for Chichester U3A and to those wonderful members who have already registered their interest in helping out and becoming part of these two teams.

Please do contact the chair if you can help in any way. You will be warmly welcomed and then we can continue to enjoy many more engaging talks from visiting speakers, as long as we have the IT they require.

Keeping Chichester U3A up and running

Our AGM is coming up in May and will be held just before our speaker’s talk. Between now and then, we will be preparing to say goodbye to our webmaster and our treasurer. More big shoes to fill, but both members will effect a comprehensive hand over and give support, whilst you settle into your role.
We are also looking for additional committee members who will be able to support in a variety of areas. As time goes on, we will be posting further details of these roles. Please contact the Chair if you would like to register your interest, or know someone who would be great, but is shy about putting themselves forward.
Please do consider that you may be just the person we are looking for. The more of us volunteering, the more certainty there is that Chichester U3A will continue to operate
.
Look out for the nomination forms, which will be appearing between now and the AGM.Chichester U3A chair

How to Play Bridge – from the Beginning

BASIC BRIDGE FOR BEGINNERS

Applications for the February course are now closed.
Members are invited to apply for the next course which will run for six weeks from Thursday 21st May to Monday 29th June and there are currently six places available.  Applicants would need to be real beginners and commit to every Monday and Thursday morning in that period.
Later in the year a further course would start on or after 18th October and finish no later than 10th December, depending on interest.

Current Affairs Forum
( Beyond the Headlines)

There is currently a vacancy in the forum.
We meet third Wednesdays, for a couple of hours in the morning, and discuss one major “hot” topic each month.
Members jointly decide on our next topic by consensus. It’s then open to individual members to offer to research and present a forthcoming topic but there’s no compulsion.
A variety of topical issues have absorbed forum meetings recently: including, for example, School expulsions and the rise in youth crime. Is regulation needed to prevent scamming? Does the civil service need reform?
Usually, about eight or so members attend and our convivial meetings are held in members’ homes,  by invitation when and if convenient.

If you’d like to join us please contact the leader or the Groups Co-ordinator.

Recorder group

The Recorder Ensemble has entered for the Chichester Festival of Music, Dance and Speech. The main entrants are youngsters, but there is the possibility for oldsters to enter as well. The music section has a class for recorders and, within that, a category for adults – any size of group, any combination of recorders, own choice of programme but must be under 10 minutes. We have decided to have a go and are preparing four short pieces to perform at 1.50 pm on Saturday, February 29th in the Central CE Academy in Orchard Street.
Support from U3A members would be welcome, although it will cost a visitor £3* to watch our session (about 30p a minute!). Wish us luck!

* “Please note there is an admission fee for non-competitors of 3.00 per adult per session or 5.00 for more than one session/all day. A season ticket (which covers all events except the concert) is 20.00. There is no fee for children of 16 and under.”

Cryptic Crossword Groups

Both groups currently have a vacancy and we would be delighted to welcome more cruciverbalists!

Group 1 (for those with crosswording experience) meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday mornings each month.

Group 2 (for near beginners or less confident cryptic solvers) meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings each month.

We work together to solve crosswords and we practise our solving techniques.  We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy our sessions together. Both venues are in Chichester, on bus routes and near carparks.

If you would like to know more, please contact

as is appropriate for you.
