Appreciating the Chichester Townscape

At the next Coffee Morning on 5 September, the group leader will be happy to talk to any members interested in participating in a pilot scheme for this new group. (The group is planned to take place on Tuesdays from 11:00 til 1:00).
If you would enjoy visiting areas of the city, interpreting and recording what you see, under the guidance of an experienced architect, this group may be for you!

Day Sailing Group

On our sailings on 19th October and 3rd December we will be joined by Kerry Jackson, a respected RSPB expert, and she will provide us with a commentary and observations on the incoming and visiting migrant bird and wild life which make their home in Chichester Harbour over the winter. I (AW) would hope that participants on these days will give a small personal donation to Kerry for the RSPB, as I will on the day. Further details of these sailings and others are available from Andrew Walker, the group leader.

Further information on all groups is shown on the Chichester U3A website. If you would like to find out more about a particular group, go from there to the webpage for that group, and use the contact form there to send a message to the group leader. If that fails, contact the groups team.

Trips and Outings

  • !!! CHANGED DESTINATION !!! Thursday 20th September 2018 – Milestones Museum and the Watercress Line – places available

Portsmouth Corporation Tram by Graham Horn

Milestones – Hampshire’s living history museum

    CC BY-SA 2.0

Our coach leaves from the Western side of the Chichester Bus Station at 09.00 on Thursday 20th September. Parking is available close by. Due to overbooking in the Jane Austen House reservations system, we have had to replace the planned visit there with one to the nearby Milestones Museum (in Basingstoke). This is a museum of living history. The museum’s streets, shops and buildings are built to show how people used to live, from the age of the Victorians, with cobbled streets, a replica Victorian school room – complete with chalkboard and teacher’s desk and local pub and forward to the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s through to rationing in the local sweet shop – and even a working printing press and cars through the ages. Staff are dressed in clothes appropriate to the age. Most people say “we had one of those” to the exhibits around the museum. Lunch is available on site if required or outside in the museum grounds with your own picnic. After leaving Basingstoke we take a short drive to The Watercress line where we will have a return trip in 1940 and 1950’s Southern Region coaches pulled by a steam locomotive of the era. Time is available to see the onsite museum and attractions before we leave for Chichester again to return there by 17.00.If anybody wishes to cancel their reservation due to the change in programme, please advise Andrew Walker, the Chair. who will arrange a refund or carry forward to a future trip next year.

We have 6 places available on this trip.

  • Thursday 18th October 2018 – Autumn Tints at Sheffield Park Gardens, and the Bluebell Line – places available

A day trip by luxury coach to East Sussex for a guided walk in these famous gardens for a beautiful trip through sensational gardens in the depth of autumn colour followed by a trip on the steam railway from Horsted Keynes to East Grinstead and return, then coach ride home – Guide price £42.00 pp, or £35.00 pp for National Trust members. We have 8 places available on this trip, as we have contracted a larger coach than previously booked. Contact the Trips and Outings team for further details and to reserve a place. (Photo by permission of Bluebell Line.)
  • Monday, 17th December – Visit to Westminster hosted by our Chichester MP Gillian Keegan, and a tour of Parliament

Gillian, our MP, has offered to host a 45 minute question and answer session in a Commons Committee Room after our 75 minute guided tour – please prepare your questions and submit them to the Chair, 7 days before our visit, so that we can have a full and meaningful discussion within our time available – our Chair, Andrew Walker has agreed to act as Chair of that meeting.

We hope to have a route back home that encompasses the Christmas lights of Oxford Street and Regents Street – not guaranteed until the day!

Due to the popularity of this December trip and its over subscription, our MP has agreed to host us again in the Spring – I (AW) have 20 names on the reserve list already: if you would like to come on another tour of Parliament in the Spring, contact Andrew Walker, the Chair

Information on all currently active offerings can (nearly) always be found on the Travel and Outings page.
