Dear Chichester U3A member,

To see the last six or so bulletins, click here
I have cautiously resolved on a new policy, of including news for only two or three weeks, so bulletins will get shorter, and you’ll have to pay attention or you’ll miss something.

  3. Appeal for help from Hayling Island U3A

The Hayling U3A ,as part of their research into the social life on Hayling Island during the 1920’s 30’s and early 40’s, are preparing montages of the Hayling Island Service personnel who lost their lives during WW2. We are keen to meet as many relatives of these men as possible to ensure that the montages of the men we have prepared are as accurate as possible. We also wish to speak with relatives of Hayling Civilians who lost their lives through enemy action. It is very difficult to locate the names of all the local residents; we are planning with the help of the Hayling Lions Club and the Community Centre to place a memorial plaque commemorating their lives. We are concerned that we do not omit any names. If any member of your U3A has a connection with Hayling Island we would be pleased to hear from them.

Our research has also discovered a poster advertising the ‘Hayling  Island Follies ‘ who gave Summer Shows in Creek Road. We are keen to discover which years the troupe performed and the exact location.

Hayling Island over the years has seen many changes, yet subjects which are of concern of many folk today, ‘limited road access ‘for example was being discussed by the powers of the day during the 1920’s and the Government of the day granted monies for the straightening  of the road from the bridge to the sea front. It did not take place because it was thought to be a waste of public money by members of the Council.
If you would like to contact us please do so at changingyears@haylingu3a.org.uk or 02392469394.
Many thanks, Mike Burnham,  Hayling U3A.
