 Messages from the Committee

Taking Care of Your Personal Data

Chichester U3A respects your personal data and we have kept it safely in a secure database for several years. It was designed and written by one of our members and has served its purpose well. However we have recently transferred your personal data to a new, equally secure database called Beacon.

Beacon has several advantages over our historic system.  It has been developed specifically for U3As on an initiative of the National Executive Committee of the Third Age Trust.  This was successfully rolled out at the end of 2015 and quickly became popular with a growing number of U3As. The National Executive Committee then took action to secure the long-term sustainability of this project by employing a commercial company to provide a professional level of maintenance for the system and by setting up a central and regional support system nationwide – these are U3A volunteers who provide support, advice and training.

When our membership data was successfully transferred into Beacon last week, Chichester U3A became the 200th U3A to start using this system, so we are in good company!  As Webmaster, I feel our data is in good hands.

Beacon will give us all the facilities of our old system for the maintenance and use of the membership data, and with bulk emailing facilities for communicating with you. Beacon also has several more capabilities which we will be looking to exploit in the near future. The first of these is a Financial package, which has the promise of simplifying the work of the Treasurer.  Another package will enable us to monitor Group membership and operate Group waiting lists and will also simplify the communication between Group Leaders and their members.

There are still more capabilities in Beacon that we will hope to use in coming months to improve our service to you and maintain a strong control of your personal data. You may not notice much difference at first, but keep your eyes open for new initiatives that Beacon will help us to deliver.

Ray Davies, Webmaster

Groups with Vacancies
Scrabble
Vacancy for Scrabble. Runs every other week starting Monday 8 April at 2.00pm. Cost per term is £10.00 per person.

New Groups
Golf
I have been asked if anyone is interested in having a golf group. If there are enough keen members, we would look at local golf courses to try to establish a team. Please contact the Groups Team.
Croquet
Are you interested in joining the new Croquet group? The group will meet on the 3rd Wednesday each month starting on Wednesday 18th April – time 10.00am – 12.00pm.  The cost will be £5.00 per session all equipment provided. We are still hoping to start the monthly sessions on Wednesday 18th April, but this is looking quite doubtful because of the wet lawns at Fishbourne. Please contact the group organiser now to get your name on the list. We will let everyone know if we have to delay the first session until May.
Day Sailing Group
See the website for details of the new Day Sailing Group, including expected sailing dates.

Further information on all groups is shown on the website. Contact the Groups Team for group leader information.

Coffee Morning

On April 4th, our monthly  coffee morning will be in the Minerva Bar & Grill, from 10:00 to 12:00. Coffee, cakes and conversation will be on offer; we hope lots of members and some members of the Committee will be present.

April Quizzes

There will be two quizzes in April: one on April 10th, and the other on April 24th. Please do not book for both! The menu is the same for both.

The closing dates for booking and receipt of cheques will be April 4th and April 18th respectively. Please remember it takes a full day for letters to reach the Box.
