Temporary Vacancy for Quiz Organizer

I (AS) would  like someone to take on the organisation of quizzes from next month, as I continue to have problems with my left eye. I will manage to sort out this months quiz with some difficulty. Last month ( January) a dear friend, who is not an U3A member, sorted out some of the admin, and, of course, my partner helped, although he rarely goes to the quiz nights.
If no one can step in, then the quizzes will cease for the near future at least.
if you can spare  about 3/4 hours a month to sort out one quiz, then I’d love to hear from you. If you can take on two quizzes a month, or two  people volunteer to do the admin, then we can offer the old format of 2 quizzes a month.
The admin is largely done electronically with the exception of listing the cheques so that the treasurer can bank them. I list the cheques manually, although this could be done electronically .
Liaison with the White Swan over dates and the menu, liaising with the Treasurer and Maureen over payment, as well as writing entries for the Bulletin and website are additional tasks. I always try to go to the pub to make sure the evening runs smoothly, even if I don’t participate in the quiz.
I hope this gives a flavour of what is involved, and I’d be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in taking over from me at least until I am able to read and write without a magnifying glass.
Angela ( Social Events  Organiser)

We are all very grateful to Angela for all the work she has put in to organize these quizzes, especially considering she has been battling with this problem the while. If you think you may be able to help us out, please contact Angela Sewell, the Quiz Organizer, and more details can be given. Either use the pop-up form below, or her phone number, which will be given in the weekly email.

Vacancy for SUN Representative

After several years, our SUN Representative Brenda Atlee wishes to stand down, and we are therefore looking for someone to take her place.

SUN (Sussex U3A Network) organises activities which may be beyond the resources of individual U3As, or which are best provided on a collaborative basis, including:

  • A programme of very popular study days
  • Workshops led by members
  • Projects & festivals of art, crafts, music and more
  • Sharing of experience and ideas between U3As
  • Assistance to new U3As

There is a meeting of all the SUN representatives every three months, on the 4th Friday afternoon of the month. The meeting is very much a sharing of ideas, new groups and events as well as problems: it is effectively the ruling body of SUN .

The post also involves liaising between Chichester U3A committee and SUN, and keeping Chichester U3A members up to date on SUN events, including booking places at events (on request).

If you are interested in becoming more involved please contact Maureen Wealleans, and more details can be given.

Anniversary Events

This is a special year for Chichester U3A, as in 2018 we reach our 25th Anniversary. To celebrate, we hope to hold various events over the course of the year, and to spread the load these will be organized by various members.

One of these events is the visit to Sandhurst which is being organized by the Travel and Outings Team (more details here).

We also have two further events, which I hope will interest some of our members. These are listed below, and, as usual, are on a first come basis. I hope that further events will be announced in the coming weeks.

Monday 26th February 2018 – Chichester Harbour Wild Life Cruise. Fully booked!

Join us for a half day cruise in Chichester Harbour from 11.00 until 15.00 on a board a luxury 33-foot catamaran. You will be hosted by a qualified skipper and crew, and have an onboard ornithologist and wild life expert to explain the fauna and wild life we see. This time of year sees many visiting birds on their migration route, together with sheltering fauna such as various seal species. No sailing experience is necessary as this will be mainly a motorized cruise (unless weather permits), but you should have personal mobility. We have 6 places available, and the cost is £50 per person to include the qualified skipper and crew and expert guide plus safety equipment. Lunch and refreshments are available on board, or bring your own picnic.

Our skipper and crew are qualified and will impart their knowledge as our guests require. The craft has full facilities with a superb saloon to relax in and eat lunch or take a coffee. Trips and Outings

We now have confirmation of the date of our second visit; it is Wednesday 16th May,10-12pm. (Please arrive before 9.50am.)
I (MO’B) will be contacting everyone on the waiting list to confirm their attendance and to glean the information required for Health and Safety reasons.
Please note there is no transport provided for this trip: the coffee mornings are an ideal place to meet others who are attending and to discuss sharing transport.
There are six places still available on this trip.

This charity trains dogs to help and support those who have a physical disability. The nearest location is at Midhurst. They offer information tours, that last about an hour, between the months of April and October. The tours are free, but we are asked for a voluntary contribution of £5.

Our visit will take place on the 30th May 2018 at 11.00 am.

There is no transport for this event so we will have to make our own way there or organise a car share.

There are now over 30 people attending this event. (I am told there is room for 20 more.) Again the coffee morning is an ideal place to meet others who are going, if you need to discuss a lift to Midhurst.

There is a cost of £5.00 attached to this trip; this is a nominal charge to cover the basic cost of our visit. This has to be paid before we go, so I will be at the coffee morning on Wednesday 7th March and the monthly meeting on Thursday 15th March, and can take payment by cash or cheque.

Fully booked – Waiting List.

Holiday in Devon

A very similar trip to this took place in 2016 and was enjoyed by all those who took part.
We would like to offer Chichester and Worthing U3A members the chance to join us on this excursion to the English Riviera.Torquay – 4th-7th June 2018
The Railtrail travel company are once again organising an exciting itinerary for us around the Torquay and Dartmouth area. After travelling down by executive coach we will be staying for 3 nights Dinner, Bed and Breakfast at the Livermead House Hotel at Torbay with wonderful views across the bay. The stay will include steam hauled rail trips, a river boat trip up the river dart, and possibly a vintage bus ride. You will have the opportunity to visit Agatha Christie’s former home “Greenway” on the banks of the River Dart, or you may prefer, to have an interesting and amusing tour of the Dartmouth Naval College. On the way home we will stop at the impressive National Trust Montacute House to view the house and gardens and have lunch.
Cost estimated at £410-430. A single supplement of £30 may apply. A £50 deposit will be requested when booking, with the balance in 2 instalments if required. All to be confirmed when numbers are known.
Please notify me of any mobility issues you may have, as I need to ensure you can board the coach safely and can manage getting on and off small ferry boats. There may also be a lot of standing and slow walking when visiting attractions.
Please specify any dietary requirements so that I can notify the hotel.
We have four places left.
Contact details will be given in the email.

Please send me a message via the usual channels if you wish to have some item of U3A news put in the Bulletin. Likewise if you have some constructive suggestions as to how to improve the Bulletin. Best wishes, David Rees
